Mippin the brilliant mobile news/ portal service just announced they have released an application on the Android platform. It's basically a launcher (icon on the mobile desktop rather than a bookmark) plus an interface to the mobile site with some nice touches and additional features. Justin at mippin sent me over some screenshots which show it off nicely:
Here's the startup screen, I've seen it launch and it looks amazing - the bubble in the middle animates in a nice bouncy way to reveal the app ...
Navigation tools overlay ...
Keyboard overlay
Mike Butcher at Techcrunch UK wasn't impressed - but I think he missed the point a bit - Mippin claims to have done 20k downloads so far through the Android app store which suggests that there's real potential here for other mobile sites to use Android as a channel for promotion and distribution. I spoke to Richard, one of the chief technology people at mippin a couple of weeks ago and he was singing the praises of Android in terms of ease of development.
Anyone with a mobile site should be looking to launch a basic app on the Android store that pushes users to your service.
