One of the remaining barriers to mobile internet really taking off in the UK and other western markets is that data tariffs on prepaid phones are still really expensive and/ or not easy to understand the cost of. For example, Vodafone UK is charging £2 per MB to prepay users after they go over 15MB in a day, which costs £1.
Good news then that Virgin Mobile, hardly known as a data pioneer, has launched a new data tariff for both contract and prepay users which costs 30p (50c) for a whole day's usage, up to 25 MB, which is pretty generous considering that a lot of the contract data bundles were under 10 MB until quite recently. The tariff lets you browse ANY site, unlike Orange, which is restricting prepay mobile internet users to specific sites like mobile facebook. Here's the details:
| GET UNLIMITED* WEB ACCESS FOR 30P A DAY FROM VIRGIN MOBILE! Love the Mobile Web? From the 8th December, you can get unlimited* web access for one simple price – just 30p a day. That’s up to 3 times cheaper than most other networks. What’s more, it costs the same whether you’re browsing our site or any other site online. |
This is all fantastic news - we are finally seeing the beginnings of cheap mobile data on prepay which will start unlocking the youth market for mobile internet. We could finally start seeing some of the usage growth and success stories that have happened in markets where there is cheap prepaid data (like South Africa).
Good to see Virgin doing something like this - really encouraging.
